Bittern Reservoir
Bittern Reservoir was constructed in the 1920's as an off stream water storage and was supplied to by surrounding metropolitan Melbourne catchments via a pipeline. It is located 500m southeast of the Devilbend Reservoir and is much smaller in comparison.
Bittern reservoir was decommissioned along with Devilbend as Cardinia Reservoir was commissioned. Since being decommissioned the supply of pipeline water has stopped and this has led to a reduction in water levels. While this is an issue, high water levels also pose a threat as if this happens it will breach the dam wall and flood wetlands surrounding Hodgins Road.
As you are able to walk all the way around Bittern Reservoir and get close to the water’s edge, it provides good vantage points for bird watching as it also hosts a large array of birds.
